Buster Posey Continues Hit Streak Against Florida Marlins

July 29, 2010- By Jonathan Lowell

The San Francisco Giants are making a run at first place in the National League West. They have already taken two out of a four game series with the Florida Marlins, and look to take the fourth game Thursday. MLB odds are in their favor to win three games in the series.

Buster Posey has been the force pushing the Giants to within 2 1/2 games of the division lead behind the San Diego Padres. Posey’s 21 game hit streak is the best among rookies this season. He is now one hit away from tying all time Giants legend Willie McCovey for longest hit streak by a rookie. McCovey set the record in 1959.

In Wednesday night’s game Andres Torres was the hero with a base hit to deep center field over the drawn in Marlins’ outfielders. Left fielder Aubry Huff says while Posey has started his career impressively, Torres deserves team MVP.

“Since he’s been at the top of our lineup, to me, he’s been our MVP,” said Huff . “If he gets on base two times, more times than not we’re going to win. He’s really carrying us, especially lately.”

Torres finished with four hits, one that splashed down in McCovey Cove for a two-run home run. His game winner came after three-straight singles by the Giants loaded the bases, giving the lead-off hitter a chance to end the game. MLB betting trends will surely continue to favor the Giants if they continue their winning ways.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy knows that he will need his players to match the impressive form show by Torres. His ground-rule single in the 10th inning was his second walk-off hit of the season.

“This kid’s done everything,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s waited for this opportunity and he’s taking full advantage of it. I can’t think where we would be without Andres.”

The Giants’ pitching did everything they could to give the game to the Marlins, blowing 7-1 and 9-2 leads.

“If we keep playing like that, I’m sure we’re going to win a lot of ballgames,” Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez said. “We never gave up. We came back, we battled and we tied the game against the best closer right now in the National League … and that was a very nice comeback.”

A 9-5 lead in the seventh inning wasn’t enough for Jonathan Sanchez to earn the victory. Instead he was saddled with his fourth no decision in a row. His last win came on July 5th.

MLB betting lines have set the Giants as the favorite in the final game of the series behind Madison Bumgarner at -145 odds. The Marlins are the underdogs at +125, and will start Anibal Sanchez.
