Daytona 500 Kicks Off The 2012 NASCAR Season February 26
February 19, 2012 – By Scott
The Daytona 500 had its debut race back in 1959. But only since 1982 has it served as the opening race of the NASCAR season. Next Sunday at 1:00 pm ET at Daytona International Speedway, the 2012 NASCAR season kicks off with the running of the Daytona 500.
The Daytona 500 is arguably the biggest race of the year. There is so much that has occurred in this race that only adds to the intrigue it brings on a yearly basis. And this year is no different.
First off, the 2.5 mile track has new surface. This was greatly anticipated after last year’s fiasco in which the race was delayed for over 2 hours to fix a crater between turns one and two. Not to mention, the two car tandem (as opposed to the pack racing) that is now in effect could lead to a whole new Daytona experience.
Anther hot topic is that of Danica Patrick making her debut in the race. Patrick is making the switch from Indy racing to the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series. A whole different world for her but one that many fans have been anxiously awaiting.
Trevor Bayne made his debut in this race a year ago and ended up winning it. However, history is not on his side to repeat as only three times have there been back-to-back winners. This feat was accomplished by Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and Sterling Martin.
The active driver with the most career wins in the Daytona 500 is Jeff Gordon with 6 victories. The most all-time is Richard Petty who has 10.
It will also be interesting to see if last year’s Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart can continue his success into the new season. He got off to a good start in Saturday’s Budweiser Shootout where he finished 2nd to winner Kyle Busch.
All in all, the Daytona 500 is the most heralded races of the year. Not to mention, it will kick off the 2012 NASCAR season.
