July 3, 2011 – By Scott
The Fourth of July is a national holiday that is a time for Americans to celebrate their country’s independence. Celebrations will take place all over the U.S. and are culminated once night falls with fireworks that many look forward to year round.
Not only are fireworks a staple for this holiday, barbecues will take place throughout the day as many enjoy their favorite foods cooked on an outdoor grill. One of the most favorite of these foods is the hot dog and the country has found a way to celebrate this delicacy and will do so by way of the 2011 Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.
One of the most noted champions in this contest is Joey Chestnut. The four time defending champion weighed in at 218 pounds for the 2011 event. Chestnut set the record two years ago by consuming 68 hot dogs but fell short in last year’s competition by eating 54 but still walked away the winner.
Consuming that many hot dogs at one time has got to make many think about the health concerns that could come with the vast amount. But Chestnut, who expects to consume around 20,000 calories on Monday, said that he visits his doctor regularly and he is ok to compete once again.
“I run, I really try to stay healthy, and I count my calories rigorously when I’m not doing the contests,” said Chestnut.
Before Chestnut began his reign on the contest, Takeru Kobayashi was the big name when it came to the annual competition. However, last season he jumped on to the stage during the contest and was arrested. This occurrence has led to Kobayashi being banned from the competition.
This year’s event is set for Monday July 4 at Coney Island in New York. It will take place at 1pm ET. Not only is this a contest that many around the nation enjoy to watch, it also is an opportunity for those who like to wager. Online sportsbooks have fielded some great odds for this year’s event and have tagged Chestnut as the favorite to win his 5th competition in a row.
