Jose Aldo And Vitor Belfort Avoid Upset Losses At UFC 142 Saturday Night

January 15, 2011 – By Scott

UFC 142 took place in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday evening and did what it had set out to do.  There was plenty of exciting action in the slate of fights.  The two headline fights features Chad Mendes taking on Jose Aldo and Vitor Belfort going up against Anthony Johnson.

The first of these was a huge title fight where the home crowd favorite Aldo was defending his belt against Mendes.  MMA Sportsbooks had tagged Aldo as the betting favorite with a moneyline set at -325.  They were right as Aldo successfully defended his title after stopping Mendes at the end of the first round.

Mendes came into the fight with his wrestling skills being his main arsenal.  But he found out that Aldo had a pretty good takedown defense, avoiding his attempts to take the fight to the floor throughout the bout.

Aldo landed a devastating knee to end the fight after he got out of a clinch by Mendes as he retained his featherweight title and improve to 21-1.  The win marks his 14th straight victory and handed Mendes his first career loss.

“I felt the best I’ve ever felt for a fight,” Mendes said. “I was very prepared, and he just got me. Watching a lot of his fights I knew it was going to be tough to take him down. He’s very athletic.”

In the Belfort vs Johnson fight, oddsmakers had Belfort as the favorite in this bout.  Johnson, who on Friday was 11 pounds over the middleweight limit, came out with a vengeance.  He came out firing and even closed the eye of his opponent.  But Belfort finally got on top of Johnson and eventually choked him out.  Now, Belfort has only one loss in his last seven fights which came last February to Anderson Silva in a middleweight title fight.

“I’m back on track,” said Belfort, the former UFC light heavyweight champion. “I’m focused on my goal, and I’ll pursue it.”
