Man Sues Kansas City Royals Over Wayward Hotdog Toss
February 24th, 2010- By Bryan Cross
Baseball fans everywhere go to the various parks on game days to partake in America’s great past time. They watch the great players of today, enjoy the outdoors, and get hit with the occasional hotdog in the eye? Apparently.
A man who attended a Royals game back on September 8th of last year, claims that a wayward hotdog thrown by the team mascot, Sluggerrr, connected with his eye, causing a retinal detachment and cataracts.
The man who filed the lawsuit against the team, John Coomer, seeks over $25,000 in damages sustained by the event.
The lawsuit attests that the Royals “failed to adequately train its agents.”
The team has refused to make any public comments to date. Currently, the Royals are seeking a new candidate to fulfill the mascot duties for the upcoming 2010 Major League Baseball Season. Toby Cook, the spokesman for the Royals, said that there is “no connection” to the incident with the hotdog, ESPN.com reports.
With Spring training on the horizon, the Royals look to rebound from a 65-97 2009 campaign in which they tied for last place in the American League Central Division.
Minnesota won the AL Central in a tightly contested race over Detroit last season. At the end of the 162 games, both teams were knotted at 86-76 and needed a one game play-in to see who would move to the playoffs.
The Royals will need to improve their overall batting average, as it was only .259 last year, which ranked towards the bottom of the American League. Additionally, the struggled in other offensive categories, such as on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Their pitching rotation had a combined ERA of 4.83, good enough for 12th place in the AL.
The Royals are not among the favorites on Major League Baseball Sportsbooks to contend for the World Series Championship. Currently, Bodog Sportsbook has Kansas City’s odds at 85/1 to claim the title.
