Michael Irvin Back In Court For Rape Charge
February 6th, 2010 – Written By Bryan Cross
Michael Irvin is back in the headlines. And again, it’s not for anything good.
The former Cowboys wideout, and current ESPN analyst, has been accused of rape in a suit filed in the Broward Circuit Court.
The Miami Herald reported that a woman says that Irvin, a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, sexually abused her at a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fl., in 2007. No criminal charges have been filed, and it is believed the woman simply wants monetary compensation.
Irvin denies the claims, saying the two only met briefly.
Irvin has already been relieved of his duties as a talk show host for ESPN 103.3 in Dallas, but his status as an analyst for NFL Network is still up in the air.
“His contract was up and the show has not performed,” ESPN wrote in a statement, explaining Irvin’s release from the network. “We had previously decided to cancel the show and determined this morning to make it effective today. The permanent replacement begins at 11 a.m. CT today — Ben Rogers and Jeff “Skin” Wade ["Ben and Skin"].”
The alleged attack happened on the Fourth of July late at night when the woman says Irvin bought her alcohol and brought her to his room. She says she was then raped, and forced to perform oral sex on another man. The report doesn’t name the other man because the defendant says she doesn’t know who he was.
Although the incident was first reported 16 days later, there was no surveillance tape so the investigation wrapped up without any charges filed. Irvin agreed to settle the case out of court, but the woman’s asking price of $800,000 was too much.
“This complaint is tantamount to criminal extortion,” his lawyer, Larry Friedman, told the Herald. “There is no merit to the complaint.”
The woman passed a polygraph test, but negotiations have only stalled since.
“There were discussions back and forth between the parties,” Friedman said. “Nothing came of it.”
