NCAA Tournament Final Four Player Props: Butler Bulldogs v. VCU Rams

April 2nd, 2011- By Bryan Cross

The most improbable Final Four match up since seeding began back in 1979 takes place on Saturday night when the No.8 seed Butler Bulldogs take on the No.11 seed Virginia Commonwealth Rams. It will be the highest combination of seeds playing in a national semifinal game.

When looking the teams however, Butler is making their second-straight Final Four appearance, but are still considered quite the Cinderella team. The Bulldogs are just a victory away from getting back to the National Championship, where they were within a basket of winning it all last season.

Head coach Brad Stevens and his Bulldogs came in the 2011 NCAA tournament as the No.8 seed in the Southeast Region, and defeated both the No.1 and No.2 seeds en route to their journey through the region.

On the other side of the court, VCU is just about an unlikely team as they come in the Final Four, as they had to win an extra game just to get into the main 64-team bracket. But the Rams have rolled. With the exception of surviving an overtime game against Florida State in the Sweet 16, VCU has won all their games by double-digit points, including over No.1 seed Kansas in the Elite 8.

“That’s what’s got us here. For five straight games, we’ve been playing great defense,” remarked VCU’s Jamie Skeen. “If we play great defense again against Butler, we can probably come out with the win.”

For both teams, they tend to lean towards defense and limiting turnovers as keys to potentially coming away with a victory.

“Butler is much more sound. They’re not going to make any type of defensive mistakes,” VCU coach Shaka Smart said. “We have to get into the paint and not always to shoot the ball. We’ve got to touch the paint to pass. We have to make the extra pass on the perimeter. We have to use shot fakes. You have to finish with strength.

VCU and Butler have been lead by players who have stepped up big in the moments that define a season.
