2014 NFC Championship Game Betting Preview: 49ers vs. Seahawks

Seahawks vs. 49ersPrepare for another heavyweight slugfest between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers. The stakes could not be higher for these two division rivals, with a berth in the Super Bowl on the line.

We already know that the 49ers and Seahawks don’t like each other. The players don’t like each other, even the coaches don’t like each other. It’s not exactly apparent why Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll don’t care for one another, but it probably goes back to their days in college at Stanford and USC, respectively.

It all adds fuel to this NFC Championship Game fire, and should make for a heck of a game Sunday afternoon in Seattle.

The Seahawks are the No.1 seed in the NFC, and get the game at home. CenturyLink Field is probably the biggest home-field advantage in the NFL. In fact, it was reported that a small earthquake registered following a Marshawn Lynch touchdown run against the Saints this past weekend.

Of all teams though, San Francisco won’t be intimidated by the atmosphere. Though they might not be intimidated, it can still affect signals and play calling on offense.

This is a close betting line, with Seattle set as three-point favorites over San Francisco. This is the smallest betting line that the Seahawks have been favored at home all season long. But this is for good reason. The 49ers are built to win in the playoffs. They play great defense, have a good run game, and a quarterback that can throw the ball around the field.

Add in the fact that receiver Michael Crabtree is getting plays underneath his belt and meshing with the offense, and San Francisco is looking good. If the game would be played at Candlestick Park, the 49ers would be favorites. The difference on the betting line between these two is so slight, that the home field is the only factor.

Of course, there is a reason that Seattle is the No.1 seed. They are built to win in the postseason as well. The defense is on the same level as San Francisco. In fact, the Seahawks’ secondary is the best in the league, making it very difficult for quarterbacks to throw on them.

One challenge for Seattle is how quarterback Russell Wilson responds following his worst statistical performance. Wilson threw for just 103 yards in the win over the Saints. Cleary New Orleans did something to affect the passing game. You can bet that the 49ers will have watched that game film to study up.

This is a matchup of the two best teams in the NFC, and the NFL should be very happy that this is the game they wound up with. This is true in both aspects actually, with Denver and New England on the other side.
