Denver Broncos Favored (-9) Over San Diego Chargers In Playoff Matchup

Broncos vs. ChargersOf all the teams to come in and visit the Denver Broncos in the Divisional round of the playoffs, it had to be the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers are the only team to beat the Broncos at home this season, using that victory to springboard into the postseason as the No.6 seed. San Diego has taken full advantage of its opportunity so far.

The Chargers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals handily last weekend 27-10 to advance through the wildcard weekend. It was the largest margin of victory of the weekend by two touchdowns. San Diego comes into Mile High with plenty of momentum.

This will be the 109th meeting between the Chargers and Broncos since the rivalry began in 1960. However, never once have these two organizations collided in the playoffs. That makes this matchup somewhat historic.

Denver enjoyed the bye week at the No.1 seed in the AFC. They have been able to rest up and once it was known who they’d play it was business as usual. Broncos fans won’t forget the Divisional playoffs last season when Baltimore came to town. You can bet the team hasn’t either.

Once again, Denver is established as the big favorite. This is the largest point spread of the entire weekend, but it shouldn’t be a surprise. Bovada Sportsbook has installed the Broncos as nine-point favorites to win. For those wanting to bet the point spread, Denver will need a double-digit victory in this one.

The Broncos have had no issues scoring this season. Denver scored 30 or more points in all but three of its games. This puts a ton of pressure on opposing offenses, meaning that Philip Rivers and company will have to have a good day as well.

Of course, one of the three times that Denver failed to reach 30 points was against San Diego. The Chargers held the Broncos to just 20 points at home, their lowest of the season. The biggest difference in that one was that San Diego held the ball for 39 minutes. That meant that Peyton Manning and the Denver offense were on the field half the time as the Chargers. This proved to be the pivotal statistic in the game, and something that San Diego will try to do again.

Keeping Manning off the field has been about the only way to stop him. The Broncos defense ranks in the bottom half of the league, so teams can move the ball on them. To control the clock, running back Ryan Mathews will play an important role. Mathews racked up 127 yards and a touchdown on the ground in the last meeting.

The winner of this game will go on to play the winner of the Indianapolis vs. New England matchup on Saturday. A win by Denver and they will host the AFC Championship. San Diego already knows that no matter if they win it will be another game on the road.
