Odds Out Through Online Sportsbooks On NHL Eastern Conference Championship

Though the 2009-2010 regular season is set to end in just over a weeks time, not all of the Eastern Conference playoff spots have been clinched. Five spots have already been guaranteed, leaving the last three positions in the Eastern Conference up for grabs. The NHL futures found through online sportsbooks have, despite the open spots, already released odds on which team will win the Eastern Conference Championship.
In order by rank, the Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Ottawa Senators have already sealed the deal for playoff slots. The remaining three slots are still up for grabs, with Atlanta, Boston, Montreal, the New York Rangers, and Philadelphia engaged in a hard battle for playoff contention.
Looking at the current standings will see that Montreal, the Flyers, and the Bruins all have the best chance at remaining in the top eight. Between these teams, as well as New York and Atlanta, the point totals are close enough for any team to make it through.
The Canadiens, Flyers, and Bruins have a respective 87, 86, and 85 points in the standings, with the Rangers as the closest competitor with 82 points.
The Rangers will have to win each of their last three games in order to seal their play off slot, while the Bruins must not make another point in the standings. The epitome of the phrase long shot, the Rangers will indeed have a tough fight ahead of them.
In the event that the Bruins win either of their three games, of which one would be considered an impossibility, the Rangers would lose their shot at the playoffs.
Currently, the Capitals are the favorite for the Eastern Conference Championship. This year will mark the Capitals third straight year int he Playoffs, though the previous two have been lost in the Quarterfinals to the Flyers, then the Semifinals to the Penguins, both in 3-4 defeats.
The Capitals have already clinched the Presidents’ Trophy, and are leading the league in standings. With 53 wins, the Capitals have taken 310 goals the season, marking another high for Capitals’ Captain, Alexander Ovechkin.
Perhaps the most anticipated match up will take place between the favored Capitals and the close second, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins, spearheaded by captain and superstar Sydney Crosby, are the close second for taking the Eastern Conference. The three time Stanley Cup winners are aiming to take an additional championship after a shaky season against the Capitals.
Even with the bitter rivalry between the Capitals and the Penguins, rising star Zach Parise has been taking big points for the New Jersey Devils. Though Parise and Team USA failed to succeed int the Vancouver Winter Olympics, the Devils have turned out to be a top contender for the 2010 Stanley Cup Championship.
The Playoffs are set to commence on April 14th. In order to be successful in taking the 2010 NHL Eastern Conference Championship. Currently, only the Senators and the Capitals have taken their place in the bracket. The odds are out, the games are about to commence, and time is running out – a champion will soon be declared.
