Peyton Manning Has Surgery On Pinched Nerve, Lingering Issue Says Indianapolis Colts
March 3rd, 2010- By Bryan Cross
Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning underwent a procedure to fix a pinched nerve in his neck which was causing pain, the organization said.
According to the Colts, Manning had the procedure done on Tuesday at a hospital in Chicago. The surgery was conducted by Dr. Richard Flesser. Manning reportedly stayed the night in the hospital and returned home the following day.
The team says that the procedure was successful, and Manning expects to participate in the workout regimen for the off-season.
ESPN.com reports that the four-time NFL MVP has battled this type of issue for the last four seasons, however it has never affected his preparation for a season.
“While it never has affected Peyton’s activity on or off the field, the Colts’ medical staff, after post-playoff examination, thought it best to resolve the situation now,” the Colts said in a statement.
Since the Colts drafted him 12 years ago out of the University of Tennessee, Manning has not missed a single start in his career. Only Brett Favre can lay claim to more consecutive starts by a quarterback in NFL history.
Manning quarterbacked the Colts to Super Bowl XLIV this past season, where they came up short, losing to the New Orleans Saints 31-17. Throughout the course of the year however, the team set a new NFL standard for wining, with their seventh consecutive season of 12 or more wins during the regular season.
Their road to the Super Bowl included a win over Baltimore in the divisional round of the playoffs, and against the New York Jets in the AFC Championship game.
Under first year head coach Jim Caldwell, the Colts were among the top in the league on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Despite two young starting receivers in Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie, Manning and the offense did not miss a beat. He quickly developed a chemistry between the two, as Garcon turned into one of the elite receivers in the league.
NFL Sportsbooks are favoring the Colts to win Super Bowl XLV next season behind the experienced play of Manning. Currently, Indianapolis has been installed with odds at 7/1 according to Bodog Sportsbook.
