Rashad Evans/Chael Sonnen Prevail At UFC on Fox 2

January 29, 2012 – By Scott

UFC on Fox 2 took place Saturday night at the United Center and had many great fights on  tap that turned out to be just that.  Headlining the event were two huge battles in which the winner moved one step closer for a shot at the title.

One of the key matchups featured Rashad Evans taking on Phil Davis for a shot at the light heavyweight title.  MMA sportsbooks had labeled Evans as the clear favorite and after it was all said and done, Evans made oddsmakers look good.

Evans really had control the entire fight.  All the judges scored the bout 50-45 in favor of Evans but it really was probably a lot worse than that.

Evans did what he usually does when the fight is off the floor and totally dominated.  And even when the fight went down, the area Davis was to be far superior in, Evans really came out on the better end there.  But despite the win, Evans wished he could have done a lot more than he did to get the win.

“I’m happy the fight is over. I’m happy I got the win, but I wanted to do better,” Evans said. “I wanted to put on a more spectacular win for the Chicago fans and the Fox [television] fans.

“I didn’t win the way I envisioned myself doing. But at the same time I got the job done. I can’t be too overly critical, because in the UFC wins are hard to come by.”

Evans improved to 17-1-1 in his career and next up for him…a shot at the light heavyweight title when he will face the champion Jon Jones on April 21 in Atlanta.

The next marquee matchup featured Chael Sonnen taking on Michael Bisping.  And just like in Evans’ fight, he made oddsmakers look good as he came out on top based on the judges score cards.

The first two rounds seemed to be going Bisping’s way.  He had a great defensive plan and also appeared to out-strike him as well during rounds 1 and 2. But his domination in the final round was enough to land him the win.

“Yeah, I knew we were in the middle of a close fight,” he said. “I went in there to win the third round — I had a sense of urgency for sure. I think we both did. I think we both knew we were in the middle of a hard fight. But you’ve got to understand, [Bisping] hit me so hard in the first round, I wasn’t positive when we were in the third. I was just glad when it was over.”

Now, Sonnen gets his shot at a title as well in the middleweight division when he will face Anderson Silva in Sao Paulo.
