Ryan Moore Prepares To Defend At Wyndham Championship While Fans Are Permitted To Use Cell Phones

July 28, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

At the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina this week on the PGA Tour, the tournament officials will try something new and go against tradition at most every PGA Tournament.  While typically the use of cell phones are allowed during practice rounds, they are not permitted during tournament rounds. On Thursday at the Wyndham Championship the fans and patrons will be able to have their cell phones on the ground.

Mark Brazil, the tournament director, remarked that he and the tournament committee considered the use of cell phones after fans complained that they were not able to use be in touch with families and business.

“We’re going to be kind of the guinea pig tournament on allowing this,” Brazil stated. “We’re just going to test it here.”

While cell phones are not allowed on tournament days, at other tournament across the country it is not uncommon for a fan to sneak one in.

“People are going to sneak [phones] in anyways, somehow get them in. It’s adults. I feel like if you let them actually bring them out there, they’ll probably respect the fact that you let them have it and actually go use those [designated] areas a lot more,” defending champions Ryan Moore said. “People appreciate the fact that you’re not treating them like a 10-year-old: ‘You’re not responsible enough to do this.’ They’re actually letting them have it, and just say, ‘Please, just be respectful of play.’ I think people will do that, for the most part. I really do.”

Moore took the approach that he wants to give fans the opportunity to call their friends based on his performance on the golf course.

“I’m going to do everything I can to come out of the way and play this event every single year,” he said.

The Greensboro stop is one of Moore’s favorites on the tour, and he looks forward to playing there every year.

“When people take care of you and treat you right, you remember it,” Moore remarked. “That’s how this tournament has been for me.”

Moore birdied the third hole in what was a sudden death playoff match with Kevin Staddler, to win the championship a year ago.

“What the win did for me last year, it wasn’t quite what I thought it would do for me — it actually showed me a little bit more of how far off I was, which is weird,” Moore remarked. “I simply just came in here, this is a golf course that fits my game … and I just kind of got some good momentum and I played some really good golf that week.”

Jim Furyk is the betting favorite heading into the week to win the tournament on Online Sportsbooks.
