Serbia Favored to Claim 2010 Davis Cup

The Davis cup is the mecca of international team competition on the men’s side.  Held annually since its inception in 1900, this event puts competing teams from participating countries against one another in a knock-out style format.  Last season Spain collected the honor, and will look to defend their title without their top star in Rafael Nadal.

This year, Serbia is the leading favorite according to Tennis Sportsbooks to claim the Davis Cup.  They are matched up against the United States in the opening of the team competition.

While the United States will be with out Andy Roddick and James Blake for the first time since 2000, the heavily favored team from Serbia knows that they Americans come with talented players.

“This is going to be a very important match,” top Serbian player Novak Djokovic said.

“The Americans have the most success in Davis Cup and even though they have come here without their strongest players, it is still going to be a very strong team, but with the support of the audience we can get to the quarterfinals which would be a great success for our national team.”

The U.S has historically dominated the Davis Cup, winning 32 times in the events history, and tabbing 29 runner up finishes.  Australia follows in total victories with 28.

Spain, Argentina and France follow Serbia in the line of betting favorites.

Despite Nadal’s absence, Spain boasts a horde of talent thanks to captain Albert Costa.  Costa captained the team to the victory last year in his first year at the helm.

“Being captain of the Davis Cup team is difficult but it also makes you proud, and given that there are a lot of people who could do this job, I am thankful for the renewal of this confidence in me,” remarked Costa.

Singles competition begins on Friday, March 5th, and doubles on the following day.

Spain is currently ranked No.1 in the International Tennis Federation Nation rankings.  Following Spain is the United States and Russia.  Favored Serbia currentlyranks 13 th.
