Sports Betting By The Numbers: May 19th, 2011

May 19th, 2011- By Bryan Cross

75- After letting 103 points to be scored on them in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Chicago Bulls, the Miami Heat came back with a renewed sense of aggression and attitude on the defensive end of the floor. The result was an 85-75 victory on the road for the Heat to even up the series at 1-1, with Game 3 later this weekend going down to South Florida. LeBron James tabbed 29 points on the night to lead the Heat, hitting several big shots late in the fourth quarter not allowing the Bulls to climb their way back into the game. Miami has taken home court advantage from Chicago, with three of the next five potential games to be played on the Heat’s home floor.

5.5- The betting line for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals Series between the Dallas Mavericks and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Mavericks took Game 1 on their home floor, courtesy of a 48-point performance by Dirk Nowitzki. NBA Playoff Betting Lines have set Dallas as a 5.5-point favorite over the Thunder to take a 2-0 series lead. Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant put in a 40-point effort in Game 1, but it wasn’t enough. The Thunder still have the opportunity to get a split in Dallas and steal home-court advantage, but that is predicated on a victory in Game 2, with oddsmakers believing that will not be the case.

9/1- The odds have shifted, perhaps due to the recent developments with injury, or the world rankings. But Phil Mickelson has assumed the role of the favorite to win the U.S Open on Bodog Sportsbook’s 2011 U.S Open Futures Odds. He sits at 9/1, ahead of Tiger Woods at 10/1. Woods will fall out of the top-10 in the world for the first time since before his first major championship win at the Masters back in 1997. He continues to rehab his knee and Achilles injury that he re-aggravated at the Masters in April, and then again at the Players Championship this past week in which he withdrew after nine holes in the first round. The U.S Open first round begins on June 16, which means Woods have roughly a month of rehab and preparation.

8/11- The betting line for Rafael Nadal to capture the 2011 French Open beginning next week, in the second Grand Slam of the season. Nadal comes in as the No.1 ranked player in the world, and the defending champion in the event, but has taken a back seat in the headlines this year due to the remarkable start by Novak Djokovic. Djokovic has started the season 37-0, having not lost a single match in all of 2011. Nadal has won five French Open titles in his career though, and remains the kin on clay, despite a couple of losses recently to Djokovic.
