UConn Huskies Champs Now, But Odds For Next Season Formulated
April 7th, 2011- By Bryan Cross
Just days ago, the Connecticut Huskies cut down the nets at Reliant Stadium in Houston after finishing out one of the most remarkable runs in post-season college basketball history. While winning the national tournament was an accomplishment in-and-of-itself, the combination of the Big East tournament title with the national championship caps an epic season for the Huskies.
While the Huskies enjoy their third national championship in school history, it is never to early to take a peak into what may lie on the horizon for the 2011-12 NCAA Basketball Season.
Oddsmakers were quick to get in on the action, already installing a variety of teams with betting lines to win the national championship next season, lead of course by the usual suspects in Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas and Duke.
While it is difficult to predict rankings and things of that nature due to the quick turnover rate with upper-tier basketball players jetting to the NBA, certain programs have demonstrated a remarkable amount of consistency.
And then there are teams like Butler and VCU, who continue to exhibit why the college Basketball tournament is almost impossible to predict.
Oddmakers at BetEd Sportsbook are giving it a shot though, handing out 2012 National Championship betting lines in college basketball.
Going off at +500 are Kentucky and North Carolina, leading the way in the line of favorites to win. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the two met in the Elite-8 of the East Region, to determine who would make the trip to Houston for the Final Four. The game went to Kentucky, though BetEd predicts that a second match up might again occur late in the tournament next March or April.
Behind the two at the top is Kansas and Duke, two teams that made earlier-than-expected exits this past season in the National Tournament. Both were installed with No.1 seeds in their respective regions, with Duke exiting in the Sweet-16, and Kansas a round later in the Elite-8. Oddsmakers expect them to continue to play a factor next season, with both coming in at +800.
Two Big East teams round out the odds for the top-teams next season at BetEd, installed with the same odds as Duke and Kansas. The Syracuse Orange and Louisville Cardinals come in at +800, in what will likely again be one of the deepest, if not deepest conference in America next season.
For now though, it is a different team in the Big East, in UConn, that gets to enjoy this championship for a while, knowing that they survived and accomplished a truly great feat in sports.
