Will we see the first Triple Crown winner since 1978?
That will be answered on Saturday in New York for the running of the 2014 Belmont Stakes. California Chrome has won the first two legs of the Triple Crown and will try to outlast a top-notch field on the 1.5-mile track.
The Belmont field will consist of just 11 thoroughbreds, which obviously has an affect on the payouts for those looking to wager. California Chrome is installed as the favorite, going off at 5/6, better than even money. The payout on the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner opened at 10/11 at Bovada Sportsbook shortly after it was announced that he will start from the No.2 post position on the inside. The Belmont betting lines have stayed relatively consistent, but with the race just a couple of days away the shift in payouts could go back and forth until post time Saturday.
California Chrome is far and away the favorite. A couple of Kentucky Derby contenders and Wicked Strong (6/1) and Ride On Curlin (7/1) are perceived to be the nearest challengers to the favorite.
Betting on the winner of the 2014 Belmont Stakes is the tip of the iceberg however. There are plenty of other odds available.
Below the winning payouts, there are top-three finishing wagers. A bet on California Chrome to finish in the top-three is installed at -600 ($1 wins $6). That means Bovada expects the favorite to easily finish in the top-three, with the field only set at 11.
Prop odds have also been formed, with many centering on California Chrome. There are prop lines relating to California Chrome going wire-to-wire, winning by a certain number of lengths, whether or not this will be the last race of California Chrome’s career and more.
There are also several head-to-head betting lines matching California Chrome and several other Belmont Stakes contenders. The bet is placed on the better finish between the two horses, with the overall finish in the race playing a non-factor. It doesn’t matter where the horses finish, the bet can be won on a second-to-last place finish so long as the other horse finishes in last.
There are other betting lines covering a variety of topics. The television rating for the Belmont is a wager, as well as a bet comparing the margin of victory in the Belmont to that of the margin of victory between the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings in the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals.
