2014 PLAYERS Championship Betting Preview

TPC SawgrassIf there were to ever be a fifth Major Championship, it would likely reside in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. It’s home to the PGA Tour headquarters, and TPC Sawgrass as the site of the PLAYERS Championship. This week, arguably the best field in golf descends on Sawgrass to try and win one of the most coveted championships in the sport.

While the No.1 player in the world will not be in the field, almost all of the rest of the top-50 players in the golf rankings will. That includes Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar, and the list goes on.

Online sportsbooks treat this tournament as if it were a Major. As the flagship event put on by the PGA Tour (remember that the four Majors are put on by other golf governing bodies), this tournament gets a ton of attention. Betting odds to win the 2014 PLAYERS Championship were formed Monday, with McIlroy topping the list of favorites, at 12/1. Aside from the odds to win, there are plenty of props, 3-ball odds, and other matchups that can be wagered.

McIlroy has never won the PLAYERS Championship, and in fact up until last year he had never made the cut in his first three attempts. For him to be dubbed the favorite is rather interesting, but he has played well of late. He has a pair of top-10 finishes in his last two events, including the Masters and the Wells Fargo Championship.

McIlroy’s lowest round at TPC Sawgrass is 66, so we know that he can go low. The problem has been putting four rounds together.

The three players behind Mcilroy on the betting lines are all past PLAYERS Championship winners. They include Adam Scott (14/1), Matt Kuchar (18/10, and Sergio Garcia (20/1). Kuchar enters as the most recent winner of the PLAYERS Championship in the field. The Jacksonville native won in 2012. With Woods not in the field to defend his title that leaves Kuchar as the default.

The best in the world will try to tackle TPC Sawgrass this week for the 2014 PLAYERS Championship. While the par-3 17th hole gets the majority of the attention, there are 17 other holes out there that are as difficult, if not even more. There is no margin for error when playing TPC Sawgrass, which is why it’s one of the biggest events in the world. There is no higher purse that that golfers play for, and no deeper field to challenge for it.
