Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Favored Over Sebastian Zbik In Boxing Action Saturday Night

June 4, 2011 – By Scott

An exciting night in boxing is set for Saturday on HBO as Julio Cesar Chavez takes on Sebastian Zbik for the WBC middleweight championship belt. The fight will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on “Boxing After Dark” in a bout that features two undefeated fighters.

Chavez (42-0-1) will be looking to remain undefeated in his eight year career as well as become the fifth father/son duo to win titles. Zbik did not earn the title so to speak that Chavez is looking to take. He received it after then-champion Sergio Martinez was stripped of the belt earlier this season.

Chavez has shown some signs of being as good as his father in his young career, but many feel his management has kind of protected him by picking his fights. He did get a quality win over John Duddy after hiring Freddie Roach as his trainer which has turned out to be a great move.

Since Roach has taken over coaching duties, Chavez seems to utilize his reach and height more effectively. His power has always been there and this could be a lot for Zbik to overcome. Chavez has 30 knockouts in his 43 fights. Reports have stated that this has been one of his best training camps to date so his stamina should come into play. If the fight lasts into the later rounds, punishing the body of Zbik could be the key.

Zbik (30-0) will have more to deal with on a Saturday night than just Chavez. The fighter from Germany will have a hostile crowd not on his side as many LA residents are of Latin descent. In addition, he doesn’t have the punching power that Chavez has which is evident by just 10 KOs in his career. What he does do well in regards to his punches is uses them to his advantage by landing high percentage punches. Without the punishing punching power something must work for him and that is his defense. He is the quicker of the two fighters and has an outstanding ability to block punches and has a great guard. In the past, he has shown a tendency to begin to fade as his fights go into the later rounds. He must not let this happen as Chavez will be quick to end the fight.

Chavez Jr. will be favored by online sportsbooks with a moneyline set at -250. Zbik has his moneyline set at +190.
