The College Basketball regular season is coming down the the finals games of the season, as teams jockey for positioning in their conference tournament and try and state their case for a berth of high seed in the NCAA Tournament later in March.
That is exactly the case for the No.10 Wisconsin Badgers when they take to the court to match up with the Indiana Hoosiers on Thursday night. The Badgers (22-6, 12-4) have won three in a row, with the latest a 78-63 victory over Northwestern this past weekend. Wisconsin finished the regular season unbeaten at home, 16-0 on the year that included a victory over No.1 Ohio State.
“All I said after the game was we closed out the home portion of the schedule,” remarked Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. “Now we still have games to play. But I’ve never talked about (finishing undefeated at home).”
Following the road match up with Indiana, the Badgers travel to Columbus to take on the top-ranked Buckeyes to close out the regular season.
On the other side of the court, Indiana (12-17, 3-13) really just assumes the role of spoiler against the Badgers on Thursday night, knowing that their only hope of reaching the tournament would be an improbable run in the Big Ten post-season play. The Hoosiers gave the Badgers a relatively close run in their first meeting of the season, with Wisconsin taking it 69-60.
“You have to be clicking on the offensive and defensive end to beat a team like this,” remarked Indiana head coach Tom Crean. “When they started to get momentum we couldn’t get it back.”
Indiana has proven to be a much better team at home than on the road however, and Wisconsin will need to come into this one not expecting to cruise. While the Hoosiers boast a 0-10 road record, they are 12-5 at home and have proven to give teams a much bigger obstacle.
However, Indiana has lost six games in a row, and will try and avoid a seventh in a row.
