Sports Betting By The Numbers: September 2nd, 2010

September 2nd, 2010-  By Bryan Cross

0- Those who have been waiting for the start of the college football season need to wait no longer.  It begins tonight, as several ranked teams are in action, though heavily favored on Online Sportsbooks and College football betting lines.  Second-ranked Ohio State takes the field against Marshall, while the No.13 Miami Hurricanes and No.14 USC Trojans are also in action.  Then on Saturday the full slate of games begin, as the rest of the top-25 and FBS football begin their quest for the 2010-11 BCS National Championship, headlined by the overall betting favorite, and defending National Championship Alabama Crimson Tide.

No.9- Ninth-seeded Andy Roddick went out in the 2010 U.S Open, in four sets on Wednesday night.  The American was defeated by Jank Tipsarevic 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(4).  Roddick showed visible signs of frustration with one of the umpires who signaled that he had made a foot infraction on one of his serves.  Havin won the U.S Open in 2003, much was expected of Roddick since, but he has yet to notch a second Grand Slam title for his career.

No.18- The 18th-ranked North Carolina Tarheels have suspended defensive lineman Marvin Austin indefinitely for a violation of team rules according to head coach Butch Davis.  Davis insisted that this suspension has nothing to do with the ongoing NCAA investigation of Austin, and questions surrounding his potential talks with an agent as a party in Miami, and a training session out in California. The Tarheels were expected to have one of the top defenses in the nations, and potentially the best front-seven in the entire country.  Over the course of the last 15 years, the Tar Heels are tied with having had the most defensive lineman drafted in the first round in the NFL of any other team.

60- The Washington Nationals have placed rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 60-day disabled list, as he undergoes Tommy John surgery to repair his throwing arm.  Strasburg however is expected to miss somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-18 months as he has the surgery and needs the time to recover and strengthen his arm.  For the year, Strasburg tabbed a 5-3 record with a 2.91 earned run average.  In his MLB debut, the right-hander recorded 14 strikeouts and has driven up attendance for the Nationals.

2- The Big-10 conference announced this week that they will split into two divisions next year when Nebraska joins the league and makes the 12th team.  Furthermore, the league announced the makeup of the divisions, and have kept Ohio State and Michigan separate from each other, and capable of meeting in the Big-10 championship game.
