Texas A&M Favored Over Northwestern In Saturday’s Meineke Car Care Bowl

December 31, 2011 – By Scott

When Texas A&M meets up with Northwestern in Reliant Stadium for the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston, Texas both schools will be looking to accomplish something that hasn’t occurred in quite some time.  That being coming out of a bowl game with a win.

For the Aggies, it has been ten years since they won a bowl game and that victory came in 2001 when they beat TCU in the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl.  For the Wildcats, you have to go back over 50 years for their last bowl win.  And on Saturday, they will get a fourth straight attempt to accomplish this feat.

Texas A&M (6-6) is coming into the bowl game losing four of their last five games to end the regular season.  On the flip side, the Wildcats enter the game going 4-1 in their final five contests.

The Aggies offense has been the staple to their success this season.  They are averaging 39.6 points per game which is 12th in the nation and are getting 497 total yards per game, which is good enough for 7th in the country.

The backbone to their offense has been in the running game where they are getting 209.1 yards per game.  Running back Christine Michael tore his ACL last month and finished the year with 899 yards and 8 touchdowns. But they haven’t missed a beat with Cyrus Gray who has topped the 1,000 yard mark this season and has found the end zone 12 times.

Texas A&M’s passing game is no slouch as well where they rank 22nd in the country with 290.8 yards per game.  Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been very efficient all season and has passed for 3,415 yards and 28 touchdowns.

As for Northwestern, they go as their ground attack goes.  They are getting 176.2 yards per game and more importantly are 4-0 when they have rushed for over 170 yards.  When they haven’t, they are just 2-6.  Texas A&M is yielding 106 yards per game on the ground which ranks 13th in the nation.

This will be the first meeting between these two schools and NCAA College Football Betting Lines have tagged Texas A&M as 10-point favorites over Northwestern in their bowl matchup which begins at 12:00 pm ET.  The OVER/UNDER in points is set at 71.
