The UConn women’s basketball team has had such a storied winning streak that it all came down to their game with Ohio State on Sunday to tie one of the greatest records of all time. In the second game of the Maggie Dixon Classic an opportunity stood before the Huskies to tie UCLA’s streak for the most consecutive wins in NCAA history.
Just under two minutes into the game in front of crowd of over 15,000 it seemed as though the goal of 88 straight wins might turn out to be a difficult one to achieve. The Buckeyes jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but UConn bounced right back with 13-0 run and never looked back as they went on to a 81-50 and tied the Bruins’ record.
One amazing aspect of the Huskies unbelievable streak is the amount of top competition they have faced. While facing 30 ranked teams during this unbeaten stretch, they have won by double-digits in all but two of them.
Maya Moore has been the star for the Huskies this season and has averaged 24 points and seven rebounds on the year. She did not disappoint on Sunday and poured in 22 against the Buckeyes. Tiffany Hayes led UConn in scoring against Ohio State with 26 points.
UConn will have an opportunity on Tuesday to break the record when they host No. 14 Florida State. The Seminoles will be coming off a 91-85 upset loss to Yale and will look to end the Huskies’ run of consecutive wins at the XL Center in Hartford.
