When ever you make a spread bet, the sportsbook gives you an option of which spread to pick, the favorite or the underdog. The favorite is usually favored by a certain amount of points and will be labeled with a minus sign and a number. So in actuality you would be basically picking a winner when moneylines are not always available. Here is an example of buying points in basketball. If you were to take the Miami Heat +2 at -110 pay out and you decided to buy one point, your bet would look like +3 at -130. So now Miami can win or lose by no more than three.

There are a few drawbacks to buying points though. A lot of sportsbooks charge a small fee to buy points. Some Online Sportsbooks also reduce your payout by a margin. Overall buying points are great if you think you are close but don’t think the game will completely cover the spread. I would also suggest buying points on football rather than basketball because of how many times players score in basketball.
